Pause and Sensory Reduction

Lower avoidable cognitive and sensory load before demanding more interpretation, disclosure, or decision-making.

Operational sequence

  1. Pause non-urgent questioning and remove unnecessary participants.
  2. Offer quieter lighting, sound, distance, seating, water, or an alternate text format.
  3. Keep all essential information available in an equivalent form.
  4. Ask what adjustment is useful rather than assuming one universal need.
  5. Resume only when the person can participate or choose a later time.

Failure states

  • Using alarms or fear to move a character
  • Treating reduced stimulation as isolation or punishment
  • Removing essential information with the effects
  • Assuming the same accommodation helps everyone
