Shared-Observation Anchoring

Begin with something both participants can inspect together before discussing disputed meaning.

OBJECTIVECreate a common reference point without requiring the person to abandon their interpretation.
GAME MECHANIC

Operational sequence

  1. Identify a neutral object, timestamp, record, or present condition available to both people.
  2. Describe only what is jointly observable.
  3. Ask whether the other person notices the same feature.
  4. Separate agreement about the feature from disagreement about its meaning.
  5. Use the shared point to choose a testable next step.

Failure states

  • Forcing agreement on meaning
  • Using “we both know” when there is no shared observation
  • Turning grounding into a credibility test
  • Removing the person from the evidence process
