Automated audits and expert reviews find important defects, but only representative task evidence can show whether people can locate sources, understand uncertainty, recover context, and complete the same meaningful task through different access paths.

  1. Recruit for the real task and access context rather than an abstract average user.
  2. Test semantic equivalence across keyboard, screen reader, zoom, contrast, reduced motion, mobile, and low-bandwidth paths where relevant.

Define the evidence task

Name the source, claim, route, interface state, and action under review. Common tasks include locating a source, comparing two states, explaining uncertainty, changing a filter, recovering off-screen context, pausing motion, or correcting an error.

Match coverage to plausible use

Participant coverage follows the actual audience and material failure risks. It may include novices and experts, multiple languages or scripts, older devices, narrow screens, limited bandwidth, fatigue, stress, or relevant assistive technologies.

Name the assistive-technology path

Keyboard-only operation, screen readers, browser zoom, text spacing, high contrast, reduced motion, switch access, voice control, captions, and structured tables should be tested when they are part of the route's material task.

Test the same conclusion, not merely the same content

A static table or text alternative is equivalent only when it supports the same decision, source inspection, uncertainty understanding, and correction action—not merely when the same words are somewhere on the page.

Consent, accommodations, recordings, raw notes, accessibility needs, and compensation records should be purpose-limited and separated. Public summaries should minimize personal detail and avoid deficit framing.

A small or bounded evaluation can reveal defects and support a revision. It cannot prove universal accessibility, cultural validity, safety, legal compliance, or permanent performance across all devices and future releases.

Known limitations and gaps

  • The WIP.25 material plans evaluation and accountable review; it does not claim that representative users, assistive-technology users, specialists, affected communities, or regulators have completed a review.
  • The preserved design reports remain unreviewed research leads. Their named institutions, standards, thresholds, algorithms, and performance claims require claim-specific verification before external reliance.
  • The local-only planner accepts bounded declarations rather than live participant data, recordings, free text, uploads, credentials, or personal profiles.
  • No result is accessibility certification, legal advice, specialist approval, publication authority, activation authority, production readiness, or permission to tune a live system.
  • Protected traits, diagnosis, disability, language, nationality, religion, migration history, poverty, and other vulnerable status are never defects, risk scores, quality rankings, or exclusion criteria.
