Chain of Custody

Tracks who collected, handled, copied, transformed, stored, exported, and reviewed an item so that authenticity, contamination, and gaps can be evaluated.

PLAYER QUESTION Can this item be traced from collection to the current record without unexplained substitution or transformation?

GAME BRIEFING

How this lens changes the investigation

Evidence does not become trustworthy merely because it looks technical. Preserve origin, timestamps, handlers, hashes, transformations, and access history. A custody gap reduces confidence but does not automatically prove fabrication.

Observable clues

  • Original versus derivative copies, export formats, compression, transcription, translation, and redaction.
  • Missing signatures, hashes, seals, handoff times, or handler identities.
  • Access after collection and before analysis.
  • Whether transformations are reproducible and documented.

Evidence tests

  1. Identify the earliest available source and preserve it read-only.
  2. Record every known transfer and transformation.
  3. Compare cryptographic hashes where appropriate.
  4. Label gaps and alternative explanations instead of inventing continuity.

Do not assume

  • Assuming a screenshot is the original record.
  • Treating a hash as proof of truthful content rather than unchanged bytes.
  • Calling every gap tampering.
  • Ignoring analyst-created notes as transformations.

Gameplay outcomes

  • Determines which evidence can support irreversible consequences.
  • Creates gameplay around preservation, custody disputes, and independent reconstruction.
  • Allows a damaged chain to retain limited evidentiary value with clear warnings.

FICTIONAL PRACTICE // NO ANSWER STORED

Work the lens before revealing the reasoning

Priya Nadar holds a duplicate ledger whose content conflicts with the legal export, but the duplicate passed through two undocumented devices.

Card A · Original receipt

A nightly hash receipt identifies the archive state.

Card B · Duplicate copy

The duplicate contains two omitted signed records.

Card C · Custody gap

Two device transfers lack documented handlers.

Card D · Independent artifact

One omitted signer retained a matching paper reference number.

Your analytical task

State what the custody gap does and does not establish.

Reveal the worked result and explanation

Defensible result

The gap lowers confidence in the duplicate as a complete original, but the matching hash receipt and independent reference support further authentication. The gap does not itself prove forgery.

Why

  • Custody affects weight, not binary existence.
  • Independent artifacts can narrow substitution risk.
  • The legal export also requires custody review rather than receiving automatic preference.

Common reasoning failure

Choosing whichever copy supports the preferred story and ignoring both custody chains.

Compartmented interpretation withheld

The elevated source set adds an operational explanation without replacing the public evidence chain.

SOURCE PROVENANCE

The complete research remains traceable from every gameplay interpretation.

This lens turns research into plot evidence, interview choices, case consequences, and character behavior. It is a game-design interpretation rather than a diagnostic tool, and each source remains linked to the report passages that support it.
