ORIENTATION
Cropping and geolocation are editorial claims. They can make authentic media misleading without altering the pixels inside the selected frame.
WORKING BRIEF
Record crop boundaries, purpose, editor, and link to the original. Avoid automated crops that remove participants, signs, timestamps, or surrounding actions relevant to meaning.
Use a side-by-side or overlay showing what the crop omits. A generic “image cropped” label is less useful than a direct route to the original frame.
Separate embedded metadata, visual landmarks, environmental clues, witness accounts, and independent imagery. User-supplied coordinates do not prove location.
A realistic map or model can amplify weak metadata. State whether geometry is observed, reconstructed, illustrative, or inferred.
High-risk conflict, disaster, protest, or allegation media should receive source, geospatial, rights, and affected-community review before prominent distribution.
If location or framing is contradicted, replace the derivative with a visible correction, suspend sharing previews, and preserve the original publication history.
COMPLETE DOSSIER
Terms are defined for this site’s evidence method, not as universal legal or clinical definitions.
| Question | Evidence required | Visible disclosure |
|---|---|---|
| Was the asset cropped? | Original asset and crop transform | Direct “view original frame” control |

| Is the 3D view reconstructed? | Input imagery and reconstruction method | Observed vs generated geometry legend |
| Could publication expose people? | Privacy and harm review | Aggregation, redaction, or withheld precision |
Can each consequential statement be traced to a dated source or clearly labeled interpretation?
Pass condition: Claims, interpretations, and unresolved gaps are visibly separated.
Does the presentation preserve dignity, agency, privacy, and the difference between institutions and populations?
Pass condition: People are not reduced to risk scores, spectacle, or aggregate stereotypes.
Can a changed source or finding be propagated to every derivative route?
Pass condition: The route has a visible review state, stable identifiers, and correction triggers.
