One-sentence brief
A crisp border, smooth trajectory, exact timestamp, or high-resolution image can create a false impression of evidentiary precision.
WORLD EVENT LITERACY
How to show confidence, location error, time ranges, model limits, and source provenance without hiding them behind polish.
ORIENTATION
A crisp border, smooth trajectory, exact timestamp, or high-resolution image can create a false impression of evidentiary precision.
WORKING BRIEF
Record spatial, temporal, attribute, classification, source, model, and interpretive uncertainty separately. A single confidence label cannot explain all of them.
Opacity, fuzziness, hatching, ranges, ensembles, and alternative paths can communicate uncertainty, but each needs a legend and nonvisual equivalent. Do not rely on low contrast.
Hard boundaries can make readers feel falsely safe just outside a line. Use gradients, ranges, and explicit language where risk or confidence changes continuously.
Place source name, date, claim relationship, and status near the visual. A hidden source drawer is insufficient for consequential claims.
Show when data was collected, updated, corrected, or superseded. A live-looking interface must not display stale values without a visible date.
Ask readers to identify what is certain, uncertain, modeled, missing, and disputed. If they cannot, revise the encoding rather than adding more explanation text.
COMPLETE DOSSIER
Terms are defined for this site’s evidence method, not as universal legal or clinical definitions.
Can each consequential statement be traced to a dated source or clearly labeled interpretation?
Pass condition: Claims, interpretations, and unresolved gaps are visibly separated.
Does the presentation preserve dignity, agency, privacy, and the difference between institutions and populations?
Pass condition: People are not reduced to risk scores, spectacle, or aggregate stereotypes.
Can a changed source or finding be propagated to every derivative route?
Pass condition: The route has a visible review state, stable identifiers, and correction triggers.
