GAME BRIEFING
How this lens changes the investigation
Analysis becomes advocacy when it only collects confirming details. Define expected evidence, seek contrary cases, and distinguish a true contradiction from missing context, timing error, translation, or different vantage points.
Observable clues
- Evidence that should be present under the favored hypothesis but is absent.
- Records that place a person elsewhere or show insufficient access.
- Statements that conflict on material details rather than ordinary memory variation.
- Alternative hypotheses that explain both the confirming and disconfirming evidence.
Evidence tests
- Write one prediction for each hypothesis before opening the next record.
- Search the least convenient source set first.
- Classify contradictions as material, explainable, unresolved, or likely deceptive.
- Reduce confidence when a central prediction fails.
Do not assume
- Explaining away every contradiction to protect a favored theory.
- Calling ordinary uncertainty deception.
- Assuming one inconsistency invalidates an entire testimony.
- Treating missing evidence as proof of a cover-up without testing retention and collection gaps.
Gameplay outcomes
- Opens alternate suspects and prevents tunnel vision.
- Allows a player to recover from an early wrong hypothesis.
- Makes confidence changes visible rather than silently rewriting the story.
FICTIONAL PRACTICE // NO ANSWER STORED
Work the lens before revealing the reasoning
Anika Voss suspects Tobias Venn leaked an alliance itinerary, but one encrypted terminal log shows his credentials used while pharmacy video places him elsewhere.
Tobias’s credential accessed the itinerary.
Independent video places Tobias in medication reconciliation at that minute.
Credential cloning is documented elsewhere in the case.
Security benefits from attributing the breach to a low-status employee.
State how the disconfirming evidence changes the hypothesis.
Reveal the worked result and explanation
Defensible result
The evidence supports credential use but weakens direct attribution to Tobias. Credential compromise becomes a stronger competing hypothesis and requires new collection.
Why
- Access logs establish use of a credential, not the user’s identity.
- Independent video directly challenges physical attribution.
- The correct response is confidence revision, not discarding either record.
Common reasoning failure
Treating the credential hit as conclusive and redefining every contradiction as evidence of sophistication.
