WORKING BRIEF
Clarify whether the reader must locate, compare, trace, explain, verify, forecast, or inspect a source. A single story can require more than one task, but each view should have a primary job.
Point, line, area, network, sequence, document, image, and statistical distribution each support different encodings. Forcing every event onto a globe introduces distortion and unnecessary motion.
High uncertainty favors modes that can show ranges, alternatives, and source context. A hard polygon or precise point can imply certainty the evidence does not have.
Dense global data may need clustering or small multiples; sparse documentary evidence may need a reader and timeline. More marks are not more understanding.
A mode that works on a large workstation can fail on a phone, keyboard-only interface, screen reader, low-memory device, or intermittent connection. Define the fallback before the enhanced view.
Measure whether readers can answer the intended question, identify uncertainty, locate sources, and recover context. Do not adopt a mode because it looks modern.

Can each consequential statement be traced to a dated source or clearly labeled interpretation?
Pass condition: Claims, interpretations, and unresolved gaps are visibly separated.
Does the presentation preserve dignity, agency, privacy, and the difference between institutions and populations?
Pass condition: People are not reduced to risk scores, spectacle, or aggregate stereotypes.
Can a changed source or finding be propagated to every derivative route?
Pass condition: The route has a visible review state, stable identifiers, and correction triggers.
