GAME BRIEFING
How this lens changes the investigation
An observation can be accurate while the explanation built around it is incomplete, mistaken, or deliberately manipulated. Record the sensory or documentary event first, then list each interpretation separately. Do not force a choice between believing everything and dismissing everything.
Observable clues
- Exact words, images, measurements, timestamps, or physical changes that can be described without motive language.
- Statements using causal terms such as “therefore,” “because,” “meant,” “targeted,” or “proved.”
- Later retellings that merge the original event with a conclusion learned afterward.
- Independent records that preserve the event but support more than one explanation.
Evidence tests
- Rewrite the claim as one observation sentence and one interpretation sentence.
- Mark which details existed at the time and which were learned later.
- Ask whether a neutral observer could record the same event without sharing the conclusion.
- Keep the observation in the case even when the interpretation is downgraded.
Do not assume
- That a mistaken explanation makes the underlying observation false.
- That a vivid observation proves intent.
- That institutional wording is automatically less interpretive than witness wording.
- That uncertainty requires discarding the clue.
Gameplay outcomes
- Preserves clues that would otherwise be lost when a witness is discredited.
- Creates separate investigation branches for event verification and attribution.
- Prevents a player from converting one anomaly into a total conspiracy finding.
FICTIONAL PRACTICE // NO ANSWER STORED
Work the lens before revealing the reasoning
Rowan Pierce reports that a ceiling lens rotated toward the records desk and concludes that the hospital coordinated a covert transfer around him.
A lens housing changed angle between two dated photographs.
The rotation was intended to monitor Rowan personally.
A maintenance ticket lists an unauthorized lens but no named target.
Security says the housing never moved and calls the report symptomatic.
Identify the minimum defensible finding before deciding motive or target.
Reveal the worked result and explanation
Defensible result
The minimum defensible finding is that an unauthorized lens existed and its orientation changed. The intended target, operator, and relationship to Rowan remain unresolved.
Why
- Cards A and C independently support a physical anomaly.
- Card B is a causal interpretation, not a direct observation.
- Card D conflicts with the photographs and should reduce confidence in the institutional account, not automatically prove Rowan’s full theory.
Common reasoning failure
Treating the choice as “Rowan is entirely right” versus “Rowan imagined everything.”
